The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a suspicious death that took place in the 1500 block of Nellie Jones Road near Lacrosse on Sunday. According to reports from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Dustyne Lett was dis- patched to a call at a home on Nellie Jones Road for a possible DOA call. Arriving on the scene, Deputy Lett began an investigation. Reports indicate that the case is being investigated as a “suspicious” death. The female victim’s identity had not been released at press time pending notification of kin.
Also on Sunday, Deputy Josh Watts was dispatched to a disturbance call in the 200 block of Tyson Road in the Bracey area. An investigation was conducted and Leon Minor, 57, of Lacrosse was arrested for assault on a family member. He was transported to Meherrin River Regional Jail where a warrant for assault on a family member and a protective order were obtained and served. Minor was remanded to jail on a secured bond.
On Sunday, Corporal Neil Clayton was dispatched o North Bend Park for a call of campers possibly smoking marijuana. Corporal Clayton met with a park ranger at area B of North Bend Park and proceeded down to the beach area where there were several indi- viduals and Corporal Clayton detected a very strong odor he associated with marijuana. After receiving consent to search a boat at the beach area, Corporal Clayton recovered two jars containing plant like material and when
field tested, tested positive for marijuana. Sherry Ann Poonsammy, 40, of Powhatan Va. was arrested for possession of marijuana
and transported to MRRJ where summons for possession of marijuana was served and Poonsammy was released.
On Sunday night, Corporal Davis Cumbia of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Toppers Pizza in the 3700 block of highway 903 for a break in call. Corporal Cumbia arrived and met with the complainant who advised they had arrived to open the business and discovered the front door glass had been broken out. The busi- ness was cleared and at this time nothing determined missing. The case remains under investigation.
While on regular patrol on Red Lawn Road on Sunday morning, Deputy Dustyne Lett observed a motorcycle parked on an access road to the power line. On checking the motorcycle, Deputy Lett found damage to the ignition and a
flat rear tire. Upon Deputy Lett running the tag received information that the motor- cycle was reported as sstolen from Polk County Florida. This case remains under inves- tigation.
On Monday while on regular patrol in the Bracey area, 2019 Deputy Josh Carroll observed a vehicle parked in the parking lot of Buggs Island Telephone Company. As Deputy Carroll pulling into the parking lot the vehicle started up and proceeded to pull off. Deputy Carroll initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and upon Deputy Carroll making contact with the driver of the vehicle observed that the driver had very slurred speech. Deputy Carroll had the driver exit the vehicle where field sobriety test was administered and at the completion of these tests Dennis Matthews of South Hill Va. Was arrested for DUI. Matthews was transported to Meherrin River Regional Jail where a warrant was obtained and served and Matthews was placed under a $1000 dollar bond.
